Fun! With Phonetics.

The client for this project was Shanthinikhethana Global Preschool, situated in Bangalore. The school prides itself on a learning model inspired by Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The brief was to design a learning module for the children that held this theory at its core.

On my first visit to the school, I noticed that a large problem the teachers faced was that the school was strictly English-medium learning, but it was situated in a Kannada-speaking locality. To combat this issue, I designed an English Language learning module, focussed specifically on phonetics and pronunciation. The module was devised for 5-6 year old students. It comprises an audiovisual narrative (in the form of a storybook) and a follow-up activity to cement the learnings in a more interactive manner.

This module was designed to teach aspects of language through linguistic and visual intelligence. To teach phonetic pronunciation, I was particularly inspired by Nonsense Literature. A large inspiration for this project was the work of Dr. Seuss. I used to hear his stories at this age, and the vivacious and whimsical stories had a large impact on my young mind.
